New Kinetic Seat design previews synthetic spider silk materials
Lexus has unveiled a new kinetic seat concept ahead of its international debut at the Paris motor show late this month.
The concept, which according to Lexus will feature a raft of advanced ergonomic features, is constructed with what it calls “synthetic spider silk materials”.
The innovative design aims to mimic human spinal movements to help stabilise the occupants head and neck, and disperse spinal loads on long journeys which should in-turn increase comfort.
“In humans, the spine acts to keep the head stable,” explained Lexus. “It allows the pelvis and chest to rotate in opposite directions while keeping the head in place, even when walking or jogging.”
By using a moveable seat cushion and back rest, the Kinetic Seat will move according to the occupant’s weight and external forces.
Lexus believes that by stabilising the head movements of its occupants, it will allow them to have more focus on their field of vision as well as making the journey more comfortable. In addition, it should aid in making driving easier.
The upholstery of the seat frame is covered in a flexible net of a spider web pattern which can mould to the shape of the occupants body.
The construction of the synthetic spider web silk is environmentally friendly, unlike commonly used petroleum derived substances. The material is mostly made up of a protein created through microbial fermentation which is then spun and processed into the new material.
